The largest published long term study of laparoscopic gastric banding has just been published in the Annals of Surgery from Melbourne. Over 3000 patients were treated with the gastric band with nearly 1000 patients having at least 10 years or more of follow up. There was a mean of 47% excess weight loss for all patients who were at or beyond 10 years of follow up. The need for revisional procedures decreased as the technique evolved. The revision group showed similar weight loss to the overall group beyond 10 years. There were no deaths recorded from either primary placement of the gastric band or revisional procedures.
