What Happens Before Bariatric Surgery?

Your initial consultation shall be with the bariatric surgeon who will perform your operation. He/she will take a comprehensive clinical assessment and then discuss with you the different surgical options that may be suited to you. They will outline in detail how the surgery is performed along with its risks and limitations.

After your initial consultation, you will be invited back for a 2nd consultation with the surgeon to discuss any queries and set surgical dates. Following this consultation, appointments will be made with the bariatric practitioner, dietitian and lifestyle coach. The preoperative assessment includes a thorough review of your medical history, preoperative blood tests, abdominal ultrasound and other assessments as required. Depending on clinical requirements referrals to other specialists may be needed prior to surgery. A preoperative gastroscopy is also done.

Your diet will be reviewed and you will be guided regarding the preoperative diet requirements. You will also be educated regarding the importance of postoperative nutrition.
