Nausea is common in the first 48 hours of the procedure. This usually quickly settles with the assistance of antinausea medication. You are likely to experience some episodes of vomiting in the months after the surgery as you become accustomed to a stomach that now has a capacity of only 100 ml. It is important to follow our dietary rules and eat slowly and chew your food properly. If you have persistent vomiting there may be an obstruction and you need to contact our team immediately.

Many patients feel constipated after surgery. This is mainly due to reduced food intake, which leads to fewer bowel movements. Adequate fluid intake may also be challenging soon after surgery. The clinic will offer advice about the best way to manage this including through increased fluid intake, keeping active and gentle aperients such as Benefibre and lactulose.

This is not always necessary. Often the skin “bounces back” and it doesn’t appear loose at all. We are aware of how loose skin can affect one’s appearance so this is something we pay close attention to. 20% of patients end up having surgery for this condition. Plastic surgery is generally not recommended until a stable weight loss has been achieved, and this will often be 2 to 3 years after surgery.
