Obesity is now a very common problem in Australia. It is estimated that approximately 67% of Australian males and 52% of adult females are either overweight or obese. In addition it is estimated that approximately 25% of children are obese. It is well established that adult obesity often starts in childhood.
This epidemic is part of a worldwide trend that is contributing to increasing levels of weight related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obstructive sleep apnoea.
Despite a variety of measures to reduce obesity this 21st century health epidemic continues.
