The Orbera program is a safe, non-surgical approach to weight loss with clinically proven results.
The program is designed to support patients in developing sustainable healthy habits for long-term weight loss and management following an initial accelerated weight loss period assisted with an intragastric balloon.
In addition to helping patients develop sustainable habits that can lead to effective life-long weight loss and management, the Orbera program is clinically proven to be a highly effective treatment for obesity.
Patients who follow the Orbera program lose 10-15kg on average in the first six months, and at the end of the 12 month program typically lose 3.1 times as much weight as patients who rely on diet and exercise alone.
The Orbera program is a comprehensive 12 month obesity treatment program in two six month stages. For the duration of the first 6 months, patients have an intragastric balloon (the Orbera device) placed in their stomachs to help them develop portion control and healthy eating practices that result in sustainable weight loss and long-term management.
At the end of the first six months the balloon is removed and patients work closely with their team of medical professionals to develop a customised diet and exercise program for the best chances of meeting their weight loss goals and keeping the excess weight off in the long term.
Throughout the entire Orbera program, your Adelaide Bariatric Centre team will help you retrain your appetite, adopt new healthy eating habits and establish an achievable exercise routine designed to meet your long-term weight loss goals.
The Orbera device is an intragastric balloon that provides “kick start” to your weight loss during the first six months of your program, when it is placed in your stomach.
At the start of your program, the Orbera balloon will be placed in your stomach during a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure.
This procedure is performed with patients lightly sedated. The deflated Orbera balloon will be placed in the patient’s stomach through their mouth, using an endoscope. Once the balloon has been placed, it is filled with a sterile salt water solution and sealed.
This procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes, and patients are able to return home the same day.
Once the initial six month stage of the program is complete, the Orbera balloon will be carefully drained and removed through a similar procedure.
Like the initial procedure to place the device, the patient is lightly sedated for the 20-30 minute procedure and is usually able to go home the same day.

The Orbera program is suitable for any adult with a BMI of 27 or higher and who is willing to follow a twelve month program involving dietary changes, exercise and use the Orbera device. The Orbera program is an excellent option for patients who may not be eligible for gastric surgery but who meet the above criteria.
Please note that some patients, like women who are breastfeeding, pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the next six months may not be eligible for the Orbera program. Our doctors can advise you of your eligibility.
Over the past 20 years, patients who have followed the Orbera program typically achieve a weight loss 3.1 times greater on average than people who rely on diet and exercise alone.
Our patients have experienced successful outcomes reducing and managing obesity through the Adelaide Bariatric Centre’s multidisciplinary programs. Each patient is treated according to a personal plan that involves our physicians, dieticians, clinical psychologists, bariatric nurses and exercise physiologists to achieve the best outcomes for them.
